Mojo Magazine Contents Page Analysis

  • The headline for the contents page is in a big, bold font, in white with the effect of a shadow. This makes the headline stand out against the background. This typography almost makes the text look as if it coming off the page. Underneath the headline there is almost a form of sarcasm and joking going on. Mojo magazine have shown how big their magazine brand is by telling us that they sell in “LONDON . MEMPHIS . EAST WICKHAM”.  The fact that they are big in London and Memphis shows that they are an international brand, promoting their magazine even more. However, when they have said East Wickham, this is more or less them joking about that they sell their magazine in even the smallest towns like East Wickham. This is a strange affect and overall I’m not s sure why they have decided to do this and put it into their magazine.
  • The justification on the first contents page is flushed right. The effect of the text being flushed right allows the picture on the contents page to stand out. The page is organised and has a lot of negative space so the picture stands out in a more obvious way. On the second page the text has also been flushed right but has also been placed directly at the bottom of the page.
  • The contents page house style of Mojo magazine is mainly line structured and very three dimensional based. There a lot of lines and structured boxes on the contents page. The text box covering the feature articles and the main cover story, on the first contents page, have a three dimensional flick to make the information stand out and link in with the house style of a 3D theme. The typography of the front cover and the contents page are the same. This shows a consistent theme to help identify and promote the brand. The first contents age is very organised and laid out in a specific way. This is to show organisation and show that it is not a very busy page. This could be so it shows the importance of these main feature articles for the magazine, and how they should be put with very other little text other than the features so customers can easily find them. Again on the second page the typography is the same as the first contents page and the front cover. There is also three dimensional text of a headline of the brand Mojos name. The effect of using the same typography for the headlines as the same for the masthead is to identify the brand more easily. It fits in with the specific house style and also shows how organised and smart this magazine is. However, on the second contents page it is busier and there is less negative space. This page includes more pictures advertising the regular articles within the magazine. These pictures are bright and busy and contrast to the black and white picture on the first contents page. Both the contents pages would appeal to an older audience as it show organisation and advertises older generation music artists.
  • Date and issue of the magazine are included on this page. This is repeated through other issues of the magazine to inform the reader. This is effective as it is informative and sets out a professional feel to the magazine. This is important that this is included so people can find the issue they are looking for. Where the date and issue are laid out they are in an obvious place for the reader to find the date and issue number, making the set out of the page clear and organised.
  • In the featured photo on the contents page there is a sense of noise created. The picture has been put in black and white as well, giving this the effect of an older generation. The fuzzy noise like quality of it and the black and white effect tell us that we know that Bob Marley is an old music artist and the black and white effect indicates that this is an old picture of him from when he was younger. This is so we know that this magazine is of older legendary music artists, and will appeal to a target market of older generations. On the second contents page, it includes 8 photos. This gives a sense of busyness and shows that there is a lot of information for people to read. The images are cropped for effect and scattered across the page to fill the page. The effect of the cropped images allows a variety of different photos and formats, and also makes an effect of the cropped image jumping off the page.
  • The conventions of the colour on the first contents page stick to three colours. These colours are black, red and white. The effect of the red with the black and white allows the red to stand out. The pieces in red on the page include subheadings, page reference numbers, and a double line enclosing the date and issue. This allows customers to easily identify what information they are looking for. The effect of the page reference numbers in red and bold and separated from the text, as if they were bullet points, show that the magazine designer set out this in an organised and formal way to easily identify page reference number to go into the contents page. The colours on the second contents page are mixed and have many colours that work together. The main colours used are red, black, blue and white. This shows the idea of a busy page and also creates a sense of organisation and disorganisation.
  • On the first contents page the magazine uses a sell to inform and promote the legendary Bob Marley. Bob Marley is recognised music icon all around the world, so an article about him will want people to buy this magazine and read about his article. This sell also links in with the one picture used that fills the whole background of Bob Marley. These both promote the article and the magazine brand wanting more people to buy this magazine.
