Rolling Stone Contents Page Analysis


  • The headline for the contents page is in a big, bold font, in white with the effect of a shadow. This makes the headline stand out against the background. This typography almost makes the text look as if it coming off the page. Underneath the contents headline, there is the magazine brand name and the date it was published in order to inform the reader. It has been placed in a red box to suit the colour scheme of red, black and white.
  • The justification on the first contents page is flushed right. The effect of the text being flushed right allows the picture on the contents page to stand out. The page is organised and has the text on the right and the images on the lfet. On the second page the text has also been flushed right but has also got a small amount of text flushed left as well.
  • The contents page continues Rolling Stones magazine house style by following with the professional looking colour scheme of red, white and black with the occasional bright colours to indicated page numbers reference. The page uses quite basic fonts those similar to the front cover (continuing the house style) however, it does incorporate some different ones to make that particular language stand out more.
  • Rolling Stone magazine uses a style of columns and lines in a certain way to make it attractive and eye catching for the reader. It makes the double page contents look neat and organised, yet appealing to the customer or reader. These columns are separated by lines within the columns to define the clear articles that are being shown on the contents page. The lines break up the articles giving another different format that allows the entire contents page to work and fit together. The organisation of the format of the lines allows the different articles to work together on two pages, but also separates the different articles, texts and pictures. Both these formats allow the double page to work together, even thought they are not next to each other.
  • Date and issue of the magazine are included on this page. This is repeated through other issues of the magazine to inform the reader. This is effective as it is informative and sets out a professional feel to the magazine. This is important that this is included so people can find the issue they are looking for. Where the date and issue are laid out they are in an obvious place for the reader to find the date and issue number, making the set out of the page clear and organised, as well as including the website and page number on the contents page.
  • The contents page is set out in a neat and organised way. All the colours and text link with each other. Rolling Stone magazine is a good example of a conventional music magazine in the sense it uses columns and good structure of text making it organised. The typography and the conventions of the colours are the same as the front cover.
  • The contents page includes page reference numbers. These are in bold fonts and in red and black colours to make the page reference numbers and the headings stand out. This connotes that this can push the importance of the main articles they are promoting in the contents page. There are several photos about the chosen articles with text on the contents page. One of the photos are making eye contact with the reader, making the article personal, but can also make it feel quite intimidating. The effect of the direct eye contact makes the reader take an interest into their article so you want to read it. The other image of Amy Winehouse shows her looking into a mirror at herself, making us know that this article is all about her and how personal it is. The effect of using different images showing one with direct eye contact, another without, and another of a cartoon allows a variety of different photos and formats.
  • The second contents page includes a lot of information about the brand of the magazine giving readers lots of extra information. The effect of this shows that they are a magazine brand that puts a lot to their customers and wants to show the success of their brand of magazine.
