Mojo Magazine Front Cover Analysis

  • Mojo magazines masthead is bold and has been used in a large font style, taking up a large space on the front cover, which is always positioned directly centre in the middle. The colour and the font of the masthead are simple yet effective and catching the attention of the customer/reader. The justification of the masthead is effective as it being directly in the middle at the top of the page catches the reader’s attention of the masthead, which notifies them first of the brand of the magazine.
  • The feature article photo is a head shot of celebrity Kate Bush. The effect of the feature article photo is to draw in the reader’s attention to buy the magazine from the person on the front cover to advertise the magazine so more people are interested in it and will want to buy it. Here Kate Bush is a worldwide known female singer so having her as mojos front cover immediately draws in customers and readers into wanting to buy mojo magazine. The picture was taken directly from the front so it is in line with the readers face, looking as if her eyes are looking directly at the reader. Her expression of her face and her eyes is very calm and sensitive, making her look as if she is wise and approachable. This connotes that as she is approachable, people should approach and buy Mojo magazine, as it is not a harsh looking brand. In the feature article photo, the picture of Kate Bush is very bright and has a shining quality about the image. This is effective as it connotes that her old and worshipped status of a legend and genius musician is translated from this image from the bright and god like quality of the purity and whiteness of the image. This also interlinks with the other famous and legendary musicians that are shown on the cover lines that are included in the article of Mojo magazine.
  • The headline is of major importance, as the headline links with the feature article photo and the biggest 20 page spread in the magazine. The headline has been flushed left and grows in font size for each sentence as it goes down the page. There are 8 rows for the headline, with every three rows in different colours. This connotes that as the headline font gets bigger and increases in size, the more important the headline becomes, leaving the last two rows of “Kate Bush” in the largest size font. This shows how important her return is and how much of a genius her music has made her.
  • Cover lines are included on the cover of Mojo magazine. These cover lines are of the major articles inside the issue. The music artists advertised on the front cover are older and legendary artists. This connotes that the demographic audience of Mojo magazine is for an older generation of people, mainly in their late twenties to early fifties. The justification of the cover lines are flushed left and flushed right making the magazine look very organised which would appeal to an older audience as well. The cover lines are interesting and are informing the reader/customer of the incredible artists that are inside the magazine in the articles. The texts within these are promoting the articles and the people so that more customers will want to go for Mojos magazine.
  • There are 2 types of fonts for the typography on the front cover. This sticks to the conventions of a typical magazine. The effect of the 2 fonts allows people to recognise the brand of the magazine. The use of the two different fonts sticks to the conventions of the style and theme within the magazine. In this case the theme of the magazine is very calm and spiritual. The light serif fonts with the bright and matching colours allows a bright yet calm feel of the magazine. There are 3 colours that are included on the front cover. These are white, blue and pink, with a hint of black. These 3 colours stick to the normal conventions of a magazine by sticking to three colours. Through the use of using white, blue and pink, these colours contrast each other yet match as well, creating a bright and calm colour scheme.
  • The demographics of the magazine is for a normal working social class, as the price of the magazine is £4.80, and it is aimed at an older age group of people, I reckon between 25 to 40 years old. The age range it is aimed at is for an older generation from the certain characteristics of the magazine. Such as the people and celebrities that are in Mojos articles. In this issue, on the front cover the musicians are of an older generation of legendary celebrities in the music industry. This would appeal to the target market they are aiming the brand of magazine to.
  • On the front cover Mojo has given a free CD and used this as a marketing tool to get more buyers for mojo magazines. This style of marketing is very effective as it encourages more people to go for a product with a free and incorporated product with the purchased magazine. This will increase sales for mojo and also improves the status of the magazine brand. The free CD also links in to the feature article photo as lists 15 tracks of Kate Bush-inspired dream pop as she is described as “the genius returns”. The free CD interests you further into reading about her return.
  • The justification of the text is set out on both sides of the cover. This is so it is organised and sets out the information neatly to inform the reader and so it appeals to the older audience. The text is justified and flushed left and flushed right with the picture directly in the middle so the picture is not interrupted by the text. This fits the normal convention of a magazine front cover. The text goes around the feature article photo without interrupting the image. This allows a more heavenly feel of this iconic music figure as she has returned to the music industry.
  • Fillers are used on the cover to fill any empty space. Examples of the fillers used are the free CD given with the magazine that has been stuck onto the front cover and the barcode that has been placed at the bottom of the page in the right hand corner. The effect of placing the barcode adds an extra factor of professionalism and allows more space to be filled up on the front page. This creates the effect of a fuller page as it allows it to look more organised rather than leaving any space. There is not much negative space on this front cover as it is mainly filled with an object, text and a large head shot for the feature article photo.
